module 5 ARCS

Keller's ARCS model to motivate learners says learners can be motivated to learn by gaining the attention of the learner showing them the topic they are to learn is relavent and to building their confidence to be motivated and the learner should be satisfied the skills or concepts they are learning; the learner will be enabled to use. When I look at Keller's ARCS model for motivation; it brings to mind Gagne's nine principles to engage learners online.

There is a friend of mine I have been trying to teach how to use the computer for chats, reading news headlines and e-mailing. This individual seemed afraid to use the computer. I have been progressing slowly with this individual and they are beginning to warm to the fact that this technology can be user friendly.I am trying to give them the confidence to use the computer.

mind map


As one can see in my mind map the learner is at the center of the connected networks constructing knowledge as she/he understands it. The mind map I constructed have three main locations on which knowledge is built. 1. The class 2. The Computer 3. Their Home environment. To begin with the teacher in the class will present the lesson concepts to the learner. The learner will connect with the teacher and lesson while networking with their classmates through threaded discussions and using books and designated web sites. The computer will connect the learner to the internet which will enable the learner to be exposed to data bases around the world on which to build their knowledge. The computer will also be used as a tool to facilitate collaboration with classmates and others. The third part of connections to aid the learner to build her/his knowledge is the home environment. The home environment consist of family, friends, associates, newspapers and magazines with prior knowledge of the content of the lesson. These concepts of the learner's network all come together and are used by the learner to construct the knowledge of the concepts presented in class. Jean Piaget's cognitive theory states that learning is an active process and related the the learner's environment and social interactions and with Stephen Downes and George Siemen's connectivist theory knowledge will be constructed by the learner.

Blog Assignment 3

Rheingold presentation mentions how man evolved from family to community to towns, states, countries and now even the global village of today with collaboration and cooperation, although there are some that stay isolated. Man would not have advanced as far as he had if not for collaborating on certain projects. Survival of the fitest in my opinon is outdated with the growth of the global village through web technology. Man is in a position where the weak can survive with the help of others.

Learning Theories

After reading the blogs of Bill Kerr and Karl Kapp I am of the opinion that there is an overlapping of various educational theories when considering the most effective way to teach and learn. No one theory can stand alone when talking about the educational process. Even when educating from a behaviorist point of view there are aspects of this mannerism that will take some type of internal thought. In this digital age when teaching or learning from one of the isms of educational thought; Stephen Downes connectivism will always be present. The connectivist thought of making connections with the various data bases that are available and collaborating with others will always be part of educating. Kerr and Kapp blog links are;

Module1 Assignment


I agree with Siemens when he says for a metaphor the online instructor should be a curator.
"a curatorial teacher acknowledges the autonomy of learners, yet understands the frustration of
exploring unknown territories without a map"(Siemens 2007). Online educators should allow the learners to use their individual strenghts to demonstrate their understanding of the content that is presented to them. The online instructor should be expertise enough to guide the learner in the direction of the content she/he is presenting to the learner. The learner should be given the space to construct their knowledge with the connections she/he makes through the use of digital technology. As Siemens states: "while the learners explore when they engage with subject matter, the key concepts of a discipline are transparently reflected through the curatorial actions of the teacher" (Siemens 2007).
